This professional education symposium is designed to provide physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians and other health-care professionals with a greater understanding of quality care, diabetes prevention strategies, current topics in diabetes management and the latest recommendations for medical nutrition therapy.

Topics to be presented at the meeting include translating evidence-based research into clinical practice; administering quality guidelines for diabetes management; understanding diabetes medical nutrition therapy; achieving optimal glycemic control during pregnancy; decreasing the emotional impact of diabetes on patients; controlling glycemic excursions through the use of insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring systems; and addressing health disparities in minority and rural populations.

Course Objectives

At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

  • Recognize the evidence-based quality guidelines for diabetes management;
  • Translate the guidelines into clinical practice;
  • Utilize helpful strategies and tools for improving compliance and patient understanding;
  • List expected outcomes from diabetes medical nutrition therapy;
  • Discuss the role of obesity therapy across the continuum of diabetes;
  • Discuss areas of controversy related to macronutrient intake;
  • State evidence supporting recommendations for food nutrients;
  • Understand the diagnosis, pathophysiology and potential complications of diabetes during pregnancy;
  • Discuss the incidence and scope of gestational diabetes, as well as the beneficial aspects of glycemic control to mother and fetus;
  • Detail the management of insulin-dependent diabetes during pregnancy;
  • List ways that emotional impact of diabetes can help or hinder diabetes treatment outcomes;
  • Describe how daily challenges can improve perspective on behavior change in a person with diabetes;
  • State basic treatment interventions to improve diabetes care outcomes;
  • Describe the measures used to assess glucose control and contract their benefits;
  • Describe the current guidelines on SMBG testing frequency from at least two major organizations;
  • Describe at least two mechanisms whereby glucose results in damage to or functional change in body tissue;
  • Describe the benefits of insulin pump continuous glucose monitoring systems in prevention of glycemic excursions;
  • Compare and contrast the prevalence of pre-diabetes and diabetes in the U.S. and Mississippi;
  • Summarize barriers and reasons for ethnic disparities in clinical outcomes;
  • List at least three suggestions for optimizing health outcomes in at-risk individuals.


Continuing Education Credit

PHYSICIANS
This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the ACCME and MSMA through the joint sponsorship of North Mississippi Medical Center and the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. North Mississippi Medical Center is accredited by the MSMA to provide continuing education for physicians and take responsibility for the content, quality, and scientific integrity of this CME activity.

North Mississippi Medical Center designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4 hours in Category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician’s Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those hours of credit that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

FAMILY PHYSICIANS
The American Academy of Family Physicians CME Accreditation Department and the Commission on Continuing Professional Development (COCPD) has determined approval for CME application #37864 forAAFP CME credit. This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 5.5 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

NURSES
This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Mississippi Nurses Foundation, Inc., an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
