Camp Kandu is a weekend-long camp for children and their parents. The camp, which is held at the Twin Lakes Conference Center in Florence, Miss., is an opportunity for children with diabetes from around the state to come together twice a year for food, fun and fellowship.
The camp is free for children with diabetes. Through the generosity of others, the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi is able to send children with diabetes to Camp Kandu as well as offer scholarships to others.
Camp participants– parents and children alike– learn about diabetes management, including the importance of healthy meal planning, exercising regularly and monitoring blood- glucose levels.
One of the most important services offered by the DFM, "Camp Kandu" gets its name from "can-do," as in the ability to do anything uninhibited by diabetes. Truly, camp participants experience– both during camp and in their own lives at home– the ability to do anything they want. Camp Kandu seeks to inspire children to live their lives to the fullest, while remaining active and healthy. The camp’s weekend activities are testament to the children’s bustling, excited and vivacious personalities. Participants do everything from tie-dying T-shirts, taking karate lessons, painting, hula hooping to relay racing.
Children with diabetes are just like any other children, with the exception that they have to pay particular attention to their medication, eating habits and blood sugar, and Camp Kandu emphasizes their ability to live healthy lives while making friends with other children in their same situation. Camp Kandu works its magic as our kids make lasting friendships with others just like themselves.
The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi (DFM) will be sponsoring its annual Camp Kandu at the Twin Lakes Conference Center in Florence on November 8-9.
The camp, which is for children with diabetes as well as their parents or caregivers, is a weekend of lessons on healthy diabetes management, including how to plan meals and monitor blood glucose levels.
It is also an opportunity for children to have fun participating in arts and crafts, relay races, karate lessons and other activities. The camp is free for children with diabetes. There are only a few spots remaining, so register today by calling 1-877-DFM-CURE.
