With a steadily increasing number of Mississippians developing diabetes, the necessity of a steadily increasing number of health-care professionals equipped with the most up-to-date tools to help these Mississippians also has grown, which is why the DFM sponsors a Continuing Medical Education symposium annually for health-care providers around the state. The DFM recognizes that one of the most important keys to assisting patients with diabetes is a well-educated and trained health professional.
"In a state with nearly 372,000 people living with diabetes - diagnosed and undiagnosed - and with no signs of the diabetes epidemic slowing down, I cannot even begin to describe the importance of our medical professionals knowing about the latest innovations in diabetes care," said Mary Fortune, Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi (DFM) executive vice president. "Diabetes treatment options, advances in research, technological breakthroughs and contemporary diabetes issues change so frequently that our health-care providers absolutely must remain educated on these subjects, especially when such a large percentage of our state’s population is affected." The annual CME symposium is held in March.
Patient Education
The DFM offers an annual patient-education meeting for health professionals, patients and their families. Past Super Conferences have featured nationally renowned diabetes experts, including former U.S. Surgeon General Rear Admiral Kenneth Moritsugu, MD, MPH, and Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999. The meetings featured everything from diabetes vendors, cooking demonstrations, the latest news on diabetes research and a session on insulin-pump therapy to a daylong session of activities for children with diabetes.
D.O.C. (Diabetes On Call)
Diabetes on Call (D.O.C.) is a free-to-the-public, statewide educational referral program providing one-on-one counseling along with free educational materials. Education is vital to understanding diabetes and self-management of the disease. To take advantage of this educational program, please call the DFM at 1-877-DFM-CURE.
