About the CME:

This professional education symposium is designed to provide physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, nurses, dietitians and other health-care professionals with a greater understanding of quality care, diabetes prevention strategies, current topics in diabetes management and the latest recommendations for medical nutrition therapy.

Topics to be presented at the meeting include translating evidence-based research into clinical practice; administering quality guidelines for diabetes management; understanding diabetes medical nutrition therapy; achieving optimal glycemic control during pregnancy; decreasing the emotional impact of diabetes on patients; controlling glycemic excursions through the use of insulin pump therapy and continuous glucose monitoring systems; and addressing health disparities in minority and rural populations.

Managing Diabetes in the Pediatric Population:

  • Discuss the prevalence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes in the pediatric population
  • Outline the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of type 1 diabetes in children and adolescents

Treating type 1 diabetes in children and teens

  • Describe the basic workup and medical management of a child with type 2 diabetes
  • Identify the key metabolic defects in type 2 diabetes
  • Discuss benefits, side effects and use of oral medications vs insulin in children with type 2 diabetes

 

Technology (CGMS) and insulin pump use in children

Educational Objectives

  • Compare and contrast CGMS vs self monitoring of blood glucose
  • Describe steps to assess readiness for insulin pump use
  • Discuss applications of CGMS data to patient diabetes management

 

Transitioning from adolescence to adulthood

Educational Objectives

  • State the unique relationship of the health care team with the adolescent and their family
  • Discuss strategies to optimize glycemic control and adherence to medical regimen in the adolescent with diabetes
  • Discuss ways to prevent diabetes burnout

  • Discuss at least four basic preventative interventions to address child obesity
  • Identify at least three common sociologic contributors to the rise in child obesity

Identifying Pre-diabetes - William Cefalu, MD

Educational Objectives

  • Be able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of various methods of identifying pre-diabetes
  • Understand the importance of receiving operating curves in assessing various predicting models
  • Appreciate the different perspectives of the clinical vs the public health approach in the use of predicting models

 

The Cardiovascular Complications of Not Treating Pre-diabetes - William Cefalu, MD

Educational Objectives

  • Learn that type 2 diabetes is a preventative disease
  • Understand that lifestyle intervention is more effective than pharmacologic intervention for the preventions of type 2 diabetes
  • Learn that lifestyle intervention improves all components of the metabolic syndrome and that the effect of such intervention is sustained even after the lifestyle advice is ceased

 

Pre-diabetes from the Community Perspective - William Cefalu, MD

  • Identify risk factor levels associated with the pre-diabetic state
  • Recognize the role of insulin resistance as a determinant of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Describe the relative risks of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the community setting

 

The Art of Individualizing Therapy for Type 2 Diabetes - William Cefalu, MD

Educational Objectives

  • Identify challenges and obstacles related to implementing guidelines for managing patients with type 2 diabetes
  • Differentiate among available and emerging therapies for type 2 diabetes, including early use of insulin to preserve beta cell function, in terms of safety and efficacy, particularly for complicated presentations such as kidney impairment or elderly patients
  • Evaluate clinical implications of emerging data on pathogenesis and individualized management of type 2 diabetes

The American Academy of Family Physicians CME Accreditation Department and the Commission on Continuing Professional Development (COCPD) has determined approval for CME application #37864 for AAFP CME credit. This activity has been reviewed and is acceptable for up to 5.5 prescribed credits by the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Nurses

This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Mississippi Nurses Foundation, Inc., an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

This continuing education activity has been approved for 5.0 clock hours of pharmacy continuing education credit by the Mississippi State Board of Pharmacy. Approval number 002-023-011-001.

Dietitians

Continuing education credits have also been requested for dietitians who successfully complete this program. Upon approval, this program is an estimated 6 Level 2 CPEUs.
